Two student visas matter: X1 (long-term, study over 180 days) and X2 (short-term, up to 180 days).

Required Documents

Usually passport, admission letter, JW201/JW202 form, visa application form, photos and health/exam materials (follow your local embassy).

After Entering on X1

Within the required window (often 30 days), convert to a study-type residence permit at the local exit-entry bureau — overstaying is illegal. The permit allows multiple entries and is more flexible than a visa.

X2 Short-Term

X2 holders generally don't convert to a residence permit but must leave or renew within the visa validity.

Note

Policies change; always follow the latest guidance from your local Chinese embassy and the university, and allow enough processing time.
