What Is the HSK?
The HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is China's official standardized Chinese proficiency test for non-native speakers. Scores are used for university applications, scholarships and jobs.
Levels and Vocabulary
- HSK 1: ~150 words — understand very basic words.
- HSK 2: ~300 words — simple communication on daily topics.
- HSK 3: ~600 words — handle basic study, work and life communication.
- HSK 4: ~1,200 words — fluent discussion on a wide range of topics; a common undergraduate requirement.
- HSK 5: ~2,500 words — read newspapers and watch films; common for graduate programs.
- HSK 6: ~5,000 words — understand virtually anything and express yourself effortlessly.
Exam Format (HSK 3-6)
Listening (~35-40 min) + Reading (~50-60 min) + Writing (HSK 4+, ~15-25 min). Full score 300; passing is 180.
Choosing a Level
Start at HSK 1-2 from zero; with one year of study, try HSK 3-4. Skipping levels is allowed — choose by vocabulary mastery: sit the exam once you know 80%+ of that level's word list.
A 3-Month Roadmap
Month 1: vocabulary lists + 30 min daily listening. Month 2: section-by-section practice + mock tests. Month 3: full timed mocks + error review. Before the exam, drill writing templates and high-frequency grammar.
